The other day I was preparing some pasta with mushrooms and peas for a friend. With two pounds of old fashioned white mushrooms to slice, I realized that my slices were uneven and slow. Though many of you may never have thought about slicing mushrooms and whether or not you’re doing it efficiently, Grubgirl does obsess about things like this. I did some research and came up with some tips on how to more efficiently slice a mushroom.
Egg slicer — For any of you that happen to have a hard boiled egg slicer gathering dust in your drawer, you can place a mushroom in there and slice the whole thing at once!

I finally got a chance to attend the wonderful SF Dives Meetup gang that recently held an event at this Thai restaurant in the Tenderloin. Dragging Ms. Stein with me since I had no idea what to expect, we cautiously drove past the Mitchell Brother’s theater and tiptoed into this place.

Reader Steve writes in with this question:
Is there a law in california that restaurant coupons do not expire?
Great question Steve. The answer is: NO, there is no such law regarding restaurant coupons not expiring.
HOWEVER, this belief could have been derived from these two scenarios:
1) Restaurant A always has a coupon for $5 off a pizza. In fact, anyone would be lame to NOT have one of these, they issue so many. If you look closely those will have expiration dates on them. However, chances are that if you bring in one that’s already expired, the staff member may just assume you could grab another one (with a later expiration date), since there are piles of them one the counter anyway.
