Grubgirl Plans for 2008

You want to read more recipes and dive reviews, you’ll get them for 2008. I’ve found that trying to coordinate schedules with my friends who want to do some research with me may not always work out, which means that you the reader (and my stomach) suffer.

I would love to investigate a new (to us) dive each weekend, assuming the establishment is open for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This may mean less investigation of weekday downtown San Francisco lunch dive finds - if you’d rather read about those, please speak up in the comments. For those weekends where I’m not able to make it to a new place, I’ll beg one of the gang for a recipe to try.

MenuPix vs. allmenus: San Francisco Restaurant Menus Online

I’ve come across two similar sites in the past few weeks that attempt to provide visitors with restaurant menu information for many urban areas.

allmenus debuted in late July. They’ve only really been live for a week, so here are the quick pros & cons:

Pros:

  • The website has a modern look & feel
  • Someone spent a lot of time typing in the menus! Menu line items are typed out (with explanations, sometimes). This helps keep the overall interface clean.

Cons:

Grubgirl Reviews and Yelp

With the explosion of local review sites like Yelp, everyone can be a Grubgirl now. In fact, after I eat at one of these joints, why not just post a review on Yelp instead?

Believe me, I have done this, and also tried searching on Yelp for restaurants that are grubworthy. But I’m realizing that all these writers have a different perception of what “cheap” is. I went to a Pho restaurant on Clement based on a Yelp review and it’s “bargain” accolades.
