Cocina Poblana: Great value for Mexican food

Cocina Poblana

(between Golden Gate Ave & Turk Blvd)

I could talk about how this little gem is nestled in a small strip of stores on Fillmore St. in Western Addition, across from the McDonald’s that about 10 years ago was reputed to have a bullet-proof order counter for the staff. Add in some words about re-re-gentrification; high rise apartments and a new condo being built around PJs (er, low-income housing). But I won’t dwell on that too much longer. Let’s talk about the food:

Tip: Tortilla Heights’ Super Spicy Salsa

Thanks to a Chowhound tip on this, I confirmed this secret with some co-workers who suggested Tortilla Heights for drinks. Now, IMHO, Mexican food, like Chinese food, should only fall into a certain grubworthy price point. So, for the bar food, I would not recommend TH for a value-based meal. Friendly staff, for sure. But this Grubgirl prefers legit taco stand meals. For $6 or less, thank you. However this was a work gathering, and I know that not everyone else is a grubber. So back to the snacks.

A Match! Bargain Bites & El Burrito Express

The SF Chronicle’s bargain bites give props to a place reviewed previously by Grubgirl, El Burrito Express. Now that’s something we can agree on, hands down!

Fillmore Farmer’s Market: Get a bargain on organic veggies

Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market

O’Farrell @ Fillmore (Western Addition)

Near the (Un)Safeway in Western Addition, there’s a low-key farmers’ market every Saturday in the spring & summer.

It’s small, only 1/2 a block long, but you can buy enough for a weekly salad, and some healthy snacks. I haven’t been to the Marina Farmers’ Market, but the prices here for organic veggies are definitely lower priced than what you find at the Ferry Plaza.

Here’s a list of the things I recall there:

- 1 fresh bread stand
