Powell’s Place Could be Closing

Powell’s Place, home of some good fried chicken in San Francisco, is possibly closing its Fillmore ‘hood location.

Granted, I’ve only eaten at the old location in Hayes Valley (and it’s mid-grub-range) and the new place looks a little too fancy for when I wanna get my grub on.

But Eater SF mentions that this old school restaurant could be closing soon.

Hard Knox Cafe: Soul Food Cooking in San Francisco

Hard Knox Cafe
2526 3rd St.
San Francisco, CA

M-Sat 11 am - 9 pm

Located out in the boonies, I mean, Dogpatch district near Portrero Hill, lies a tasty soul food restaurant. It’s apparently known by a lot of locals as when Mr. Sanchez took me there for dinner, we narrowly beat the rush.

Hard Knox Cafe - InteriorI can’t tell if this place is really a dive or a contrived dive, with the corrugated metal roofing used for wall paneling, and the various random signs nailed to that wall. Patrons are pretty diverse here, too. Clean cut yuppies, fashionably scruffy hipsters, and local residents all mix together among the vinyl-seated red booths and counter.

Los Jarritos: Delicious Chicken Mole & Sopes

Los Jarritos
901 South Van Ness
San Francisco, CA 94110
Open Daily, 9am-10pm

We ducked in here for a late Sunday lunch while I waited for my stubborn 12-year old car to get detailed. Even at about 3pm, this family-run place was still packed.

Though the breakfasts (served any time of day) looked enticing, Francisco had told me to get the combo lunch plate. Kiko’s Combination allows 2 house specialties, plus rice, beans, a green salad, and their yummy freshly-made corn tortillas. The business lunch plate is slightly cheaper ($6.95) than the dinner plate ($10.95). However, we had special instructions to order off the menu.

Memphis Minnie’s in San Francisco - The Best BBQ

Memphis Minnie’s BBQ Joint and Smokehouse
576 Haight Street
San Francisco, CA
415-864-PORK

I tasted a bunch of Memphis Minnie’s barbecue at a tech conference this past weekend. I have no idea who Memphis Minnie is,and their website doesn’t say, but I’ve found my favorite barbeque joint in San Francisco, finally. Even better, it was (practically) free. Here’s what I ate:

  • Texas Beef Brisket
  • Smoked Chicken (drumstick)
  • Potato Salad
  • Collard Greens
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Corn Muffin
