Brenda’s French Soul Food

Beignets, grits, grillades…what is all that? Knowing a few share of southerners and one New Orleans native, I decided to take TBJ to check out what all the fuss was about with Brenda’s. I needed someone along who could do an authenticity check on this grub. What intrigued me about Brenda’s was that they say no entree is more than $10 there. Better not be for breakfast, ok??

Grubgirl Plans for 2008

You want to read more recipes and dive reviews, you’ll get them for 2008. I’ve found that trying to coordinate schedules with my friends who want to do some research with me may not always work out, which means that you the reader (and my stomach) suffer.

I would love to investigate a new (to us) dive each weekend, assuming the establishment is open for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This may mean less investigation of weekday downtown San Francisco lunch dive finds - if you’d rather read about those, please speak up in the comments. For those weekends where I’m not able to make it to a new place, I’ll beg one of the gang for a recipe to try.

California Restaurant Coupons, Gift Certificates, and the Law

Reader Steve writes in with this question:

Is there a law in california that restaurant coupons do not expire?

Great question Steve. The answer is: NO, there is no such law regarding restaurant coupons not expiring.

HOWEVER, this belief could have been derived from these two scenarios:

1) Restaurant A always has a coupon for $5 off a pizza. In fact, anyone would be lame to NOT have one of these, they issue so many. If you look closely those will have expiration dates on them. However, chances are that if you bring in one that’s already expired, the staff member may just assume you could grab another one (with a later expiration date), since there are piles of them one the counter anyway.

GrubHub Debuts for San Francisco Food Delivery

I recently got a little note from Matt Maloney, co-founder of GrubHub.com, telling me that they were debuting their free restaurant delivery search engine in San Francisco, after some mad success in Chicago. As Matt puts it,

“We offer the only search to find all of the restaurants that deliver to you. Type in your address, we show you all of the menus & coupons for every restaurant that delivers to you. You can order online or by phone, it’s all free.”
