Given the latest happenings in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), I figured I’d provide a brief lesson on the culture that has created the famous 12-ingredient Salad.
First, check out CNN’s FAQ on what’s going on in Myanmar, and why, this very moment.
Next, check out the map of the country (courtesy: Lonely Planet). Ah, this is why Burmese cuisine is described as being “influenced” by Chinese, Indian, and Thai cuisine. Look at the border countries, people!
Finally, go sample some Burmese grub food at 2 of 3 tasty restaurants:
Golden Mandalay
Yamo
I won’t mention the third “Super Star” restaurant as it gets enough publicity on
its own, thank you.

How come some restaurants still are giving me food (at least in my fuzzy memory) in styrofoam containers?!
Maybe if some of them have the right quant jocks, they can get out of it, as Zagat’s explains.
“…establishments are required to replace it with compostable (paper- or plant-based bio-plastic) or recyclable (e.g. aluminum) products only if it is affordable to do so. Affordable in this case means within 15 percent of the cost of Styrofoam goods.”
So if X = 500 green containers,
and Y = 500 icky styrofoam containers,
what’s the formula to see if a place can still use the icky stuff without getting fined?

I had heard about FSC and how it was a restaurant run by the Latino Cuisine Culinary Academy, which is a program offered at the Mission Language and Vocational School around the corner. They’re only open for lunch on weekdays, so plan accordingly.
The doc and I visited this place and we weren’t disappointed. It was a little different than I expected, as this place made the list of the Chronicle’s Bargain Bites. This was no dive operation — it’s a larger simple space, with clean wooden chairs and tables. We arrived a little bit before noon on a Thursday and there were more than enough tables to spare.

If you’re the oddball grub representative among your group of friends, there’s a cool Meetup group that has regular outings to dives. (Meetup is a place where people with common interests can find others in the same locale and, shocker, meet up!)
It’s called the SF Dives group (make sure you read the About Us fine print!), and there’s a very active contingent. Grubgirl herself (that’s me) is a bit anxious about getting dropped from this list due to conflicts that have occurred on Wednesday nights but hopefully the organizer is a forgiving type.
