If you’re craving good Japanese noodles (ramen) in San Francisco, this is the place to go. I’d heard about it from several Yelp reviews, but procrastinated due to parking aversion (since this is in the Theater District). I finally had an excuse to check it out after a friend hosted a “birthday that’s sort of, but not really, a political fundraiser” for her college resident assistant (RA).

I checked it out with the other L-names (Liz & Leslie). Liz O., intriguingly, had spent some gai-jin time in Japan many years back, and I looked to her tastebuds as the benchmark for this adventure.

A narrow hole in the wall that you could easily miss if you weren’t paying attention. Even with their signboard outside, the entry is really non-descript. I’ve gone here a few times on the advice of my co-workers and the first experience was great, the next few were hit or miss.

I usually just associated San Francisco’s strip of Little Saigon (Larkin Street near Hastings Law School) as the place to go for dirt cheap and delicious banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches). The Sunset was for actual Vietnamese restaurants, and those were usually Chinese/Vietnamese BBQ hybrids, or so I thought.

Finally, a true grubgirl-confirmed value find. If you can make it here on a weekday between 8-11am, you can order jook specials for $2.50 a pop. That’s right.

K-dub and I happened to have a Friday “work from home” morning and ventured out here. Upon entering, you’ll walk down a short hallway with the kitchen directly visible through greasy glass panes on your right. There are lots of steaming pots of jook, and several deep fryers, and I noticed at least 3-4 cooks. (They weren’t waiters, that’s for sure.).
