I wrote about my experience at Hard Knox Cafe last Fall. But I’m from California. Northern California, to boot. What the hell would I really know about true Soul (or Southern) food?
After some agreement with the Grumpy Glutton about the sad state of BBQ affairs in San Francisco, I visited the original Dogpatch Hard Knox digs for another round. This time I brought with me Missie L., a native from Kentucky, foodie, cook, and oh, at one point in her life she worked on the Kingsford Charcoal brand. (This means that she got to go to “conferences” that I would interpret more as “state fair barbecues.”) Yeah, keeping one’s finger on the pulse of the American barbecue diet is such a pain, but someone’s gotta do it, right?

My poor friend ABM up and moved out of the Mission into the far reaches of the Richmond, all to cohabitate with his fiancee. This means that easy access to Popeye’s and other fixings that remind him of his hometown of New Orleans are few and far between (until Hard Knox Cafe opened up a branch, recently.)

Eater SF alerted me to the news of Hard Knox prepping a space in the Outer Richmond for its soul food goodness. Their current digs are in the Dogpatch part of town, which I reviewed last year, so this new location amongst my peoples will be a welcome addition.
(Bryant, you’ll only have 5 blocks to go if you’re looking for some fried catfish, fried chicken, or delicious pork chops and cornbread muffins.)
I’m looking forward to the invite to check out store #2…and am hoping the garlic powder flavor that seemed to be pervasive in my pork chops during my first visit is remedied.

Make sure when you decide to hit this place, that you get your driving directions down right. This place isn’t in the “hiply industrial” part of Dogpatch or Third St. It’s really in the Bayview/Hunter’s Point district. (How either of those are geographically separated, I don’t know. I seem to see them always lumped together, so I’m doing so myself.)
