Possible Trader Joe’s Hot Relish Substitute?

More than one reader has lamented about the discontinuation of Trader Joe’s Hot Bell Pepper Relish. One dear reader has found what he thinks is a substitute at his local Cost Plus…in fact, he thinks it’s the exact same thing.

Since Trader Joe’s private labels much of their inventory, perhaps this is true. Can anyone else confirm this?

“I am one of many people missing the hot relish.
My wife discovered “Mezzetta express Deli-style hot bell pepper relish” in Cost Plus in Torrance CA (Los Angeles Area).
If they are not the source of the TJ hot pepper relish I would be amazed.
They also have Mezzetta sweet pepper relish which has exactly the same flavor without the slight hotness.

Trader Joe’s Discontinues Hot Pepper Relish!

Trader Joe’s
Temecula, CA

Dear Grub Girl,

I found your website searching bell pepper relish. I also have been enjoying Trader Joe’s Hot Bell Pepper Relish, and have been hooked on it since they did a sandwich demo in the store near my home. I have been telling all my friends at Weight Watcher’s about it, and went to get some more today. I was shocked that it has been discontinued. I called Trader Joe’s corporate office and was informed that it was a “slow seller”. (not in my Trader Joe’s) Perhaps if enough people complain about this, they could bring it back. Just wanted you to know. I used it in a chicken salad with lowfat mayo, and on lavosh bread with cold cuts. Yum. I also asked them who their manufacturer was and if they sold their relish under another brand in another store. They said it was made exclusively for them.

Recipe: Easy Trader Joe’s Tuna Fish Salad

This is an easy recipe to whip up if you like tuna fish sandwiches, or tuna fish salad. But mainly I like this because I can get all these ingredients at Trader Joe’s and this whips up very quickly.

TJ Tuna Fish Salad
2 cans Tongol tuna, no oil, no salt, drained (or you can get the Albacore but this is supposedly the same and was a few cents cheaper…I can’t taste any difference)
3-6 Tbs TJ’s Organic Mayonnaise, depending on taste
3-6 Tbs TJ Hot Bell Pepper Relish
1 Tbs Annie’s Raspberry Mustard (or Dijon is fine)
1-2 tsp celery seed
1-2 tsp dill weed
salt & ground black pepper to taste
(optional) 2-3 c. cooked pasta (I used penne)
