Tucked away in an alley that actually is off Market Street (wow, in-car navigation systems really DO work!), I convinced my buddy, The Jeremy Piven Doppelganger (TJPD), to stand in line because the wait was supposedly worth it. The kicka** parking spot we nabbed on the side street also helped us with our overall experience.

Old Mandarin Islamic: Redux – Lamb Plates
I wrote about Old Mandarin Islamic previously and was not so impressed with it as a place for dirt cheap bargain bites – the bites that manage to not surpass the $5 per entree ceiling.
After some heavy persuading by Ms. Stein, who was looking for some reminders of her time spent teaching in China (read: she’s been there, I haven’t, this was going to make for a fun visit), we ventured off to the boonies (40-something street and Vicente) to get some Saturday brunch. I was going to call this post “My Asian Muslim Restaurant” but decided against it…those of you that keep up with Bay Area news may get what I’m referring to.

I had heard about FSC and how it was a restaurant run by the Latino Cuisine Culinary Academy, which is a program offered at the Mission Language and Vocational School around the corner. They’re only open for lunch on weekdays, so plan accordingly.
The doc and I visited this place and we weren’t disappointed. It was a little different than I expected, as this place made the list of the Chronicle’s Bargain Bites. This was no dive operation — it’s a larger simple space, with clean wooden chairs and tables. We arrived a little bit before noon on a Thursday and there were more than enough tables to spare.
