Chavo’s Restaurant
595 Bryant & 4th Streets
San Francisco, CA 94107

Situated South of Market near a busy freeway off-ramp, Chavo’s provides BIG portions of good Mexican food at a decent price. This is not rock bottom cheap, but for $6-8 you can get a huge cheap super burrito for lunch that stuffs even the heartiest male appetites. Another friend ordered her usual lunch plate of 2 verde (green) enchiladadas, with beans and rice. She had to take leftovers home, too, and she rarely does that. The food is fresh, the meat’s pretty good, and, oh, did I mention that the portions are huge??
The line at lunch can get long, but it moves quickly. Service is friendly, the place is clean and simple, and there’s even an outdoor patio for those rare sunny San Francisco days. I’ve heard different stories, but when I’ve ordered my lunches here, I’ve always gotten a complimentary (though small) bag of chips and salsa.
This is a rare place South of Market, since it’s one of the few restaurants that has relatively cheap eats for the neighborhood.
This place is a great find! It’s not exactly Mexican like your abuela used to make, but if you’re eating on a budget you definitely get great value. (Tip: The door to the ladies room can be tricky to open, you may want to get one of the friendly attendents to help you.)
