Mehfil Indian Cuisine: Curry in a Hurry

Mehfil Indian Cuisine
600 Folsom Street
(between 2nd St & Hawthorne St)
San Francisco, CA 94107
(415) 974-5510

Yes yes, something is afoot. Grubgirl has been spending a lot of time South of Market, near 2nd street. Why? We’ll go into that later. The main point though is that these new regions have left my stomach anxiously looking for grub bargains for breakfast and lunch.

Fortunately, Mehfil is here. Also know by some locals as “Curry in a Hurry,” this place runs a brisk takeout business with North Indian specials that range from $5 – $7. Yes, folks. The $5 includes one of four options, at least one of which is a meat. There’s a bigger Tandoori special for $7 where you get something other than Basmati rice and the entree.

Muffins Muffins: Decent Vietnamese Sandwich for the Area

Muffins Muffins
123 2nd Street
(between Minna St & Mission St)
San Francisco, CA 94105

I don’t really know if this is the real name of the current business running out of this tiny hole in the wall. Maybe the current business owners left a previous business’s awning up there because it was too expensive to take down?

Sure they sell some muffins, but it’s not like “Lamps Plus” in terms of matching the store name with what it sells.

Caffe Bianco: Tiny Portion for Tiny Price

Caffe Bianco
39 Sutter Street
(between Montgomery St & Sansome St)
San Francisco, CA 94104

I’ve greedily eyed this place as frequent morning stops at the end of the 2, 3, and 4 bus lines have me staring at this glass-windowed cafe facing Sutter Street.

But grubgirl is always grubgirl, no matter what time of the day. Around this area I have not yet found a grub-worthy breakfast joint. That is, huge portions, cheap prices, good food. These folks listed a healthy burrito (3 egg whites, cheese, salsa, lavash bread) for $3.50.

Homemade Bread: Bake Your Own

The Simple Dollar posts an article on how to bake bread at home, on the cheap. Grubgirl has searched before for such recipes, but this one stands out with its wonderful photos. (I won’t go into details about how I was adding tablespoons of yeast instead of teaspoons, during a bad bread baking phase I had…)

C’mon, Baker Mike, you must have an opinion on the reported method? Grubbers await your commentary… 🙂
