Henry’s Cafeteria: A Delicious and Cheap Lunch

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any truly grub findings. Why not? Sure, I’ve been a little busy, but really…they’re hard to find! (And even harder when some friends who claim to be grubgals and grubboys get the heebie jeebies when my eyes light up about true grub finds.) Well, this one is a hidden gem. And you have to love grub cooking to appreciate it.

Hangar One Vodka - Free Shuttle to Alameda!

I have been advised by an experienced sipper of liquor that a hangover is more likely to occur if the liquor is mixed with sugar (ie fruit juice, tonic water, soda water). I’m a little wary of proving this theory (by drinking pure vodka), but I may have the chance on Saturday.Hangar One Vodka poster

Hangar One Vodka, yes, the one that’s based in Alameda, always gives weekend tours of their distillery operations. Sounds good, but I’ve always had the darnedest time conscripting a friend to be the designated driver. Apparently the Hangar One folks have heard that excuse before.

BYOB - But Keep It Quiet!

Snarky SF food blog, Eater SF is quick to point out an innocent news leak one of the Chronicle food reporters made about a new Afghan restaurant on Polk. You get to BYOB to this place, like some other grub-friendly food establishments.

But guess what? Don’t write about it because the pigs could come a knockin’! Turns out the state department of Alcoholic Beverage Control heard about it and says it’ll be stepping up plainclothes patrols into this establishment, to bust the unfortunate shopkeepers (and maybe the BYOBers themselves).

A La Turca: Turkish Food Delights

This place is listed on the Chronicle’s Bargain Bites list, so for our quarterly catch-up session, Andrea and I went to the Tenderloin to check it out.

Though I would not classify the meal as a Grubgirl bargain, I AM highlighting this as a very solid return on value.

One appetizer, two entrees, a beer, and a soda later, we were set back $52. For Grubgirl to be ok with this is huge (of course, she had a nice stash of leftovers to bring back, too.)
