How to Eat Cheap: CNN Video

Now that it’s hip to be cheap, CNN has some food-saving tips to lower your grocery bill. Many of these are common sense to the GrubCrowd, and the main tradeoff is your time:

Watch the video on CNN.com (since I can’t embed CNN videos into WordPress.)

Some key points / reminders:

  • Plan ahead in order to buy the right things and to reduce waste
  • Buy in bulk (as long as you were planning to buy that stuff anyway)
  • Get the least-processed version of the food (ie instead of boneless skinless chicken, try bone-in)

Thanks again to SF CItyDish for the scoop on the free java giveaway in the Mission on Mondays. Eight ounces of joe is enough to get your blood pumping, and Four Barrel Coffee on Valencia & 15th is offering it up until April 20th. And even better, it’s French-pressed coffee. YUM.

Alamo Square Seafood Grill – Prix Fixe Special

SF City Dish reports that the neighborhood Western Addition restaurant has a great bargain, and when I saw the price, I had to nod my head.

Alamo Square Seafood Grill is serving up a $14.50 3-course meal (appetizer, chef’s choice of entree, and dessert) on weeknights until 7pm. That’s pretty impressive sounding. I’ll have to check it out and report back to you. (My main concern is that the entree is sizable enough…the menu is not specific on the entree.)

    Panini Sandwich Recipes for Cheap

Over at the “everything you wanted to know about paninis but were afraid to ask” site, Panini Happy, is an informative article on how to eat paninis while on a budget. Actually there are two great articles for those of you with that champagne taste and beer budget:

    1) 5 Money-Saving Tips offers some great advice on how to cut down your grocery bill by doing something as simple as buying your meat and cheese slices from the deli counter. Doubtful? Panini Happy’s investigative blogger has done the math already for you and shown that the pre-packed stuff is more expensive (because you’re paying for the packaging which is apparently worth the extra time you’ll save from not having to stand in line at the counter).
