La Palma: Great tamales & fresh tortillas

La Palma
2884 24th Street
San Francisco, CA 94110
415-647-1500

Grubgirl found this place on Yelp because she had to prep for an impromptu Mexican-food themed get-together. Tamales had been purchased on 24th Street before, but the exact store name was forgotten. Since this task had been assigned to her partner in crime, TBJ, we figured Yelp may provide a good referral.

Crystal Cove Shake Shack: New Management…and New Prices

Looks like Ruby’s has taken over management of the beloved Crystal Cove Shake Shack on PCH. I headed there today and was told this happened about a month ago.

Some changes that I noticed:

  • Shakes prices have gone up to $4.29
  • The shack’s gotten a new paint job
  • They’ve installed a POS (point-of-sale) system at the order counter — no more orders written on a scrap of paper in pencil!
  • Burgers and other food are served on liners with the Ruby’s logo plastered all over it – I can handle a little corporate sponsorship I suppose…

Yank Sing vs. City View Restaurant – Mastering the Business…

Yank Sing
Rincon Center
San Francisco

City View Restaurant
Commercial Street
San Francisco

You know of Yank Sing if you work in downtown SF. Snappy decor, fresh ingredients in their dim sum. But hold on a second. If you love your dim sum, and you’re not getting your dim sum meal comp’d, you can go somewhere else to get just-as-good dining.

New Hong Kong Menu: More Bang for Buck Noodles

New Hong Kong Menu
667-669 Commercial Street
San Francisco, CA 94111
415-391-3677

Grubgirl spotted the unbelievable prices at this hole in the wall as she was waiting for some co-workers to eat Dim Sum at City View restaurant (aka the cheaper-but-just-as-good version of Yank Sing).

What caught her eye? First, the white board that listed daily lunch specials for $4.95. Peering inside, the place was crowded Friday at noon. Not packed to the gills, but all tables were filled with an ethnic variety of faces that suggested that this place was legit.
