East Bay Asian Restaurant Robber Caught

An article in the San Francisco Chronicle noted that Oakland police had nabbed one of two suspects who they think have been robbing a string of Asian restaurants in the East Bay, starting as far back as August.

My reaction? Thinking that all Asian restaurants are going to be more grub-friendly than others, I immediately thought, “how stupid is this guy, Asian restaurants are the most grub, how much cash does he think he’s gonna get??” But after reading the article, I’m going to correct my initial reaction. Why?

Mission Pie: The New San Francisco Treat

Mission Pie
25th at Mission
http://www.pieranch.org

If you’re not paying attention, you may walk past the doorway that leads to Mission Pie, a bakery that’s been making a name for itself lately for its organic pies with a purpose. Look for the fold-out sign on the sidewalk that proclaims the store name, and the “Open” neon sign in the non-descript side window. (They’re no longer located at the 2901 Mission St. location which other places like Yelp seem to advertise. Actually, I can’t confirm that because I just know of this location on 25th St.)A selection of Mission Pies

Grubgirl Plans for 2008

You want to read more recipes and dive reviews, you’ll get them for 2008. I’ve found that trying to coordinate schedules with my friends who want to do some research with me may not always work out, which means that you the reader (and my stomach) suffer.

I would love to investigate a new (to us) dive each weekend, assuming the establishment is open for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This may mean less investigation of weekday downtown San Francisco lunch dive finds – if you’d rather read about those, please speak up in the comments. For those weekends where I’m not able to make it to a new place, I’ll beg one of the gang for a recipe to try.

Henry’s Cafeteria: A Delicious and Cheap Lunch

Henry’s Cafeteria
92 2nd Street
(between Jessie St & Mission St)
(415) 495-5112

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any truly grub findings. Why not? Sure, I’ve been a little busy, but really…they’re hard to find! (And even harder when some friends who claim to be grubgals and grubboys get the heebie jeebies when my eyes light up about true grub finds.) Well, this one is a hidden gem. And you have to love grub cooking to appreciate it.
