Eat Smart When You Dine Out: 10 Restaurant Secrets

A Busy KitchenAfter reading “10 Things Your Restaurant Won’t Tell You” over on MSN Money, you should really consider cooking that pasta dish at home, or getting your dinner from an over-the-counter restaurant.

Here are two examples that you should always remember:

  • Our specials are anything but. Every culture has its leftover dish – something tasty originally made of a whole bunch of leftover ingredients. Think of pizza, fried rice, burritos, vegetable bean soup… Well, restaurants are no different.
  • Never go out to eat on a Monday. Sure you may get seated, but, if there isn’t a lot of table turnover in the restaurant, chances are that your fresh ingredients are experiencing that “not so fresh” feeling.

Free Slurpees at 7-Eleven

7-Eleven SlurpeeHere’s a grubgirl tip. Every July 11, 7-Eleven (7-11), the convenience store, gives away a free 7.11-ounce Slurpee.

There are only a 2-3 locations listed in downtown San Francisco though I could have sworn there were some out near Western Addition.

You should only go there if you’re close by, though, or are planning to change your appearance every trip you make. 7.11 ounces is pretty small, but then again, you just need one sip to get a brain freeze!

Cheap Eats Recipes: Meals for 3 Dollars or Less

I stumbled upon a wonderful blog called Cheap Eats that has an archive of pretty tasty recipes that you can make for less than 3 dollars.

It’s got pretty photos and some great commentary. You’ve probably created similar cheap eats recipes yourself but just haven’t really thought about it.

Next time I whip something up, I’ll try to remember to photograph it. Many of my meals can be made using ingredients from Trader Joe’s, for less than 5 dollars per meal, I’m guessing.
