Legendary Palace: Oakland Dim Sum

Legendary Palace
708 Franklin St.
Oakland
510-663-9288

I kept hearing about having to go to Oakland to get true Northern dim sum, or to hit true Northern (Shanghai) Chinese restaurants. What’s the difference between regular (Cantonese/Southern) dim sum and that from the north?

All I can say is that Northern dim sum does other stuff than the small plates wheeled around on carts. You’ll see more bread & starch products. Mainly, soybean milk in sweet or salty format. It’s served in big bowls – larger than cereal bowls, smaller than…hmmm…. a large pasta serving bowl.

Rick Bayless’s Authentic Mexican Cookbook…

After coming back from a 17-day trip through Mexico, I wanted to be able to taste the same authentic cuisine that I found at the local restaurants. By that I mean anything from taco stands to restaurants where local families ate.

Surprisingly, this cookbook that I mistakenly bought from Amazon.com is doing the trick. Rick Bayless’s Authentic Mexican doesn’t have his picture on it, on Amazon, but in reality, the book ships with his mug.

Recipe: Easy Trader Joe’s Tuna Fish Salad

This is an easy recipe to whip up if you like tuna fish sandwiches, or tuna fish salad. But mainly I like this because I can get all these ingredients at Trader Joe’s and this whips up very quickly.

TJ Tuna Fish Salad
2 cans Tongol tuna, no oil, no salt, drained (or you can get the Albacore but this is supposedly the same and was a few cents cheaper…I can’t taste any difference)
3-6 Tbs TJ’s Organic Mayonnaise, depending on taste
3-6 Tbs TJ Hot Bell Pepper Relish
1 Tbs Annie’s Raspberry Mustard (or Dijon is fine)
1-2 tsp celery seed
1-2 tsp dill weed
salt & ground black pepper to taste
(optional) 2-3 c. cooked pasta (I used penne)

Cortez: More Small Plates

Cortez
550 Geary Blvd (betw Taylor & Jones)
San Francisco, CA, 94102
(415) 292-6360

Yes, Citysearch has given this place the $$$$ rating, so Grubgirl was resigned to get the most value out of this place, as she went there to meet up with a couple friends. You know how I feel about the whole small plates concept — I think it is a big rip off to the consumer. On the other hand, it is a shrewd move by business people, because…people ARE willing to pay those prices…so if the demand is there, why not keep supplying?
