IHOP Free Pancakes! February 24, 2009
GrubGirl is amazed by the number of free food being offered by restaurants lately. We usually don’t just focus on freebies, but this month, we can’t help it!
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., IHOP (aka International House of Pancakes) is celebrating National Pancake Day. This means that if you drop by a local IHOP, you can get a short stack (3) of buttermilk pancakes. Those are the most basic plain ones, on top of which you can drizzle a ton of syrup, and spread a bunch of unhealthy butter on top.

Singapore Sling Recipe
Taking a random tangent, here’s a recipe for the Raffles Hotel’s famous Singapore Sling. A traveler claims that he was at the famous bar in Singapore, and had the recipe’s portions given to him by a bartender. Whether this is an urban legend or not, give it a try.
Why is this bartender’s recipe even being mentioned on GrubGirl? To save you a whopping US$18 the next time any of you frugal travelers are on a layover halfway across our humble shores. Yes, GrubGirl has bitterly made the same mistake, while en route to India. And though we mainly focus on San Francisco bargains, this one’s applicable since San Franciscans tend to love traveling far and wide for culinary delights.

Update: Salmonella & Peanut Butter
Salmonella occurs when, ahem, icky fecal matter comes into contact with something that humans eventually end up ingesting. That could be a plant, or an animal, or in this case…peanuts.
How the heck does crap come in contact with peanuts, you might wonder?
Over at the Accidental Hedonnist blog, there’s a very good summary of the factory conditions of certain peanut plants, and what one factory boss owner (!!) supposedly knew about the tainted nuts. Summary? He was in on it but still authorized shipping of the bad PB!

IKEA Free Breakfast!
Following in the footsteps of Denny’s and their free breakfast promotion during the Super Bowl, IKEA also happens to be offering a Free Breakfast mornings from this Friday, February 13, 2009 to Monday, February 16. (Check the fine print, as there are some IKEAs that won’t be having this promotion.)
Their breakfast usually runs for $0.99, and as a “bonus” they’re throwing in a cup of their coffee, too (also regularly $0.99.) Will you stand in line for this?
