Gussie’s Chicken & Waffles – Sneak Preview?

Gussie's Chicken & Waffles - SamplerYou’ve heard about Gussie’s Chicken & Waffles, set to open later this month in the former place owned by Powell’s Place, as reported by Eater SF. (That’s on Eddy near Fillmore, er, Fillmo’, near Yoshi’s and 1300 Fillmore.)

GrubGirl was in the right place at the right time and managed to catch a preview of Gussie’s serving up some food outside at an event at the Fillmore Plaza nearby. I ordered a custom sampler plate to try some homemade mac ‘n cheese, fresh sweet potatoes, and a nibble of their tasty fried chicken. Delicious is the verdict! The sides were cooked just right and not dripping in goopy buttery sauces.   Thumbs up to the friendly folks at Gussie’s booth that were chill with the off-menu on-the-fly request, cuz otherwise the portions would’ve been even bigger!

SalmonAid 2009 – Salmon Bake at Ocean Beach 6/19

This Friday, you get a chance to eat some wild baked Salmon at Ocean Beach, at about 6:30pm, when SalmonAid 2009 kicks off its awareness-building campaign.

Salmon Bake at Ocean Beach

The full festival happens this weekend (Saturday & Sunday, June 20-21) at Jack London Square in Oakland.

What do the festival organizers want you to be aware of?

  1. Wild salmon populations have declined drastically, especially in California. Rivers and streams that were former spawning grounds (like the Sacramento and Klamath rivers) have been diverted, drained, or buried due to dams, silt, and other things.

Woodhouse Fish Co. vs. Elite Cafe – $1 Oyster Happy Hour

OystersWoodhouse Fish Company’s newest location on Fillmore Street is offering a $1 Oyster Happy Hour on Tuesdays from 4pm – 10pm. They sell a variety of oysters regularly, but during that time, 1 particular type is available for $1 each. Their latest spot is in what was once euphemized as “Lower Pacific Heights” but now resembles the trickling down of yuppiedom towards Geary and the ‘Hood. When I went to check it out last week, the place was packed and I saw quite a few grubgirls dining on oysters only.
